Two times recognized by UNESCO as the World Heritage Site, and came top New 7 Wonders of Nature that might be all enough to let us know how awesome Vietnam’s Ha Long Bay is. Indeed, its outstanding aesthetic importance and exceptional natural beauty makes this Wonder a great pride of the whole nation.

Ha Long Bay is situated in the Gulf of Tonkin, covering an area of over 43,000 hectares with 1,696 islands and islets that all have formed a magnificent seascape of limestone pillars. In fact, Ha Long’s exceptional beauty is created by the perfect blend of immense water, variety shaped limestone islands and very bright sky, making a very best work of art. Ha Long’s sea seems always the same years to years. It’s so smooth, blue and still all the time.

Ha Long Bay – A Priceless Treasure of Vietnam
Amazingly, the very own beauty of Ha Long Bay, somehow, changes by seasons. If green buds of plants burst on limestone islands in spring, giving the sea a fresh look, summer’s sparkling sunlight reflecting on the calm sea surface seems to brighten up every corner of the Bay. But in autumn, the clear moonlight brilliantly shines on limestone islands that look like gleaming pearls on the sea. As winter comes with heavy frost, Ha Long possesses a mysterious but so glamorous look.

In a nutshell, the beauty of Ha Long, definitely, can’t be fully expressed by words. With a large number of untouched limestone islands and islets rising from the sea, Vietnam’s Ha Long Bay really presents an unbelievable seascape given by Mother Nature, coming together with invaluable geomorphologic and biodiversity values. That’s everything we can say about it!!! The only way to exactly know how awesome it looks is that just come and see by your own eyes!!!

On February 6th and 7th annually (Lunar Calendar), local residents at Viem Xa Village excitedly hold a special festival at Vua Ba Temple. The event is meant to worship and recall the merit of Duc Vua Ba as well as to create an interesting and joyful time for local people before difficult year ahead. In Vietnamese, the term  ‘di nhau’ means ‘to go drinking’. Vietnamese people have taken ‘to go drinking’ to a whole new level.  A whole range of tapas-style dishes is invented to accompany a Vietnamese drinking session, such as clams steamed with lemongrass, green mango with a prawn-chili-salt dip, prawn barbecued and coconut snails sautéed with fish sauce. And it will be a great mistake not to mention the star of the Vietnamese’s ‘di nhau’ habit – Bia Hoi (draft beer).

In summers, a Vietnamese drink, especially beer, hardly goes without ice.  That stems from a fact of hot-and-steamy climate of Vietnam. In that kind of weather, a soft drink or warm beer doesn’t really hit the spot.

However, you should pay attention to the ice in the interest of hygiene because in Vietnam, your diarrhea is the problem of your choice to consume, not the responsibility of the restaurant owner. As a rule of thumb, if the ice served to you has a hole in it, it’s been made by a machine and is likely to be safe.
You can’t be sure about crushed ice as it runs the risk of having been a large block of ice, maybe touched by human hands. If your system is sensitive or that’s the first time you sample foreign foods and drinks, avoid crushed ice.

Let’s continue with our list of must-try drinks in Vietnam.

Nước sâm (Herbal Tea)

The Chinese concept of medicine foods and drinks seems to apply to Nuoc Sam as it’s claimed to have ‘cooling’ properties.  This sweet and nutty Vietnamese herbal tea, usually served over ice, is perfect to sip on a steamy day. The basic Nuoc Sam recipe comprises sugar cane, corn silk, nettle leaves, grass roots. That can be an illustration of the Vietnamese aversion to wasting anything. Dried longan can be added to the drinks to make a fun variation.

Where to try Nước Sâm Cô Ba, 3 Đinh Tiên Hoàng – Điện Biên Phủ, Q.1, Ho Chi Minh City.

Nước mía (sugar cane juice)

Vietnamese-drinks
On a sweltering hot day, it’s great to have a glass of this cooling, crips and grassy juice.  In order to squeeze the juice, street vendors run stalks of sugar cane through electric squashing machines. The finished product is usually mixed with juice from calamansi which balances the strongly sweet tasted of sugar cane. That’s just perfect drink to quench your thirst.

Where to try 39 Hàng Vải Street, Hanoi.

Trà a-ti-sô (Artichoke tea)

Vietnamese-drinks
There are two versions of this tea both of which are served with ice – the intensely bitter black tea brewed from the artichoke stems and the sweetened yellowish version made from the artichoke flower. The former version are widely loved thanks to its sweet and nutty flavor. These artichoke teas are believed to  have detoxifying and liver-cleansing properties. That somehow explains they are go-to drinks for hungover Vietnamese men

Apart from being a natural wonder, Pa Thom Cave is also a holy place in the belief of Dien Bien local people with several myths about love and loyalty, making the Cave a romantic place for travelers.

Dien Bien is also well known for a wide variety of vestiges due to the historic victory of Dien Bien Phu campaign, in the resistance war against French army. Typical examples of this are the underground hideout of French General De Castries which has been in good preservation (its original shape, structure and dimension are still maintained), Hill A1 in Muong Thanh Ward, Doc Lap Hill, and Dien Bien Phu History Museum.
